2023-12-09 01:46:01 +0000 UTC View Postoryx and crake /the maddaddam trilogy by margaret atwood rating this as a trilogy to save time. do i like science fiction, or do i just like when atwood and vonnegut do it ? i’ve yet to branch out enough to find out. atwood’s world building is so incredible, she’s so skilled at imagining futures that are close enough to our present to be believable, but creative enough to blow my mind. it takes a lot of tact to make enjoyable books with absolutely zero likable characters. 7.7/10

2023-11-24 20:25:02 +0000 UTC View Postthe blind assassin by margaret atwood this one’s a book, about a book, in which there is a guy who tells stories. meta, but easy to follow. in typical atwood fashion there are like three “twists”, but atypical to atwood they are very predictable. they are probably meant to be predictable though, because they are heavily foreshadowed, and i know atwood can burry a lead very well, if she wants to. this woman (usually) knows how to work a red herring. didn’t love this one. i was waiting for more than half the book for the book(s) to start and then by page 400 i was like ,,, okay i guess this just IS the book then ??? it felt like reading a boring biography of someone i do not know about or care to know about. i’ll probably forget about it in a months time. i did love the writing, and some phrases might stick with me, nothing to do with plot though. reminds me of plaths journals, nothing too exciting happening, but beautifully written. my favorite parts were the stories inside the book inside the book, they reminded me of vonnegut, maybe because that’s the only sci-fi i read. can’t think of a single reason this needed to be so damn long. 10/10 writing, 2/10 plot, so i guess 6/10 book overall? painful to say, or type i guess.
2023-11-23 19:30:02 +0000 UTC View Postthe testaments by margaret atwood this book is straight crack. it’s somehow even better than the first one. i kept forgetting to breathe. i couldn’t stop reading to eat. i couldn’t have stopped reading if you put a gun to my head. words can not do it justice, at least not my puny, myopic words. i gave the handmaids tale a 10/10, and this one’s even better imo, so i guess i’ll have to break the scale for this rating and go 11/10. i might even go as far as 12 if the cover wasn’t so damn ugly. the beginning seemed drawn out and the ending seems rushed, but i didn’t dislike the pacing enough to let it impact my overall rating
